The product that has given the world its best-known taste was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on May 8, 1886.
Pharmacist Dr. John S. Pemberton stirred up a caramel-coloured syrup in a three-legged brass pot in his back yard and carried a jug of his new product down the street to Jacob's Pharmacy. It was sampled, pronounced "excellent" and placed on sale for five cents a glass as a soda fountain drink. When carbonated water was mixed with the syrup, refreshment history was made!
Thinking that "the two Cs would look well in advertising", Dr. Pemberton'spartner and book-keeper Frank M. Robinson suggested the name and penned the now famous trademark 'Coca-Cola' in a unique script.
During the first year, sales averaged a modest nine drinks per day. Today, Coca-Cola is enjoyed over a billion times everyday.
Dr. Pemberton never realised the potential of the beverage he had created as he gradually sold off portions of his business. Just prior to his death, he sold his remaining interest in Coca-Cola to As a G. Candler, an Atlanta businessman.
In 1892, Candler, along with his brother, John S.Candler, Frank Robinson and two other associates formed a Georgia corporation and called it 'The Coca-Cola Company'.
Today, The Coca-Cola Company is the world's largest beverage company and is the leading producer and marketer of soft drinks. Along with Coca-Cola, recognized as the world's best-known brand, the Company markets four of the world's top five soft drink brands, including Coca-Cola light, diet Coke and Sprite. Through the world's largest distribution system, consumers in nearly 200 countries enjoy the Company's products at a rate of more than 1 billion
